There is an evil analogy in marketing...

People can be breathing along just fine... no worries going through their day but then... You tell them there is a problem, let’s say you splash water in their face... You show them the problem... then you give a little solution... ahh they feel the relief... this deflects the water thanks... But then you show them a bigger problem... let’s say you push their head under water... ahhh they are even more scared now...And you give them an even bigger solution... you pull their head  out... ahhh phew you saved them again...

They are really starting to like you for saving them... Then finally... you dunk their head under water and hold it under... But this final act form you comes at a cost... give me something in return and I’ll pull your head up away from this water... Then you save them by pulling them up again... how grateful are they for that breath... and happy to pay... To think all this time they were just happy in their own world with their unmasked free air...

But now they have to pay for something they had all along... and are happy to do it because they are scared to be under water again... Queensland is currently in the final phase... Their state of emergency powers were due to expire in a few days... They have masked up the state... yes the state... which is thousands of kilometres from top to bottom and side to side... because of a few cases...

The people in the state are struggling to breathe... I wonder what the cost of fresh air will be... I wonder how much people are willing to pay for the ‘solution’... the thing you had all along...

It is basic psychology and marketing... Agitate the problem and sell the solution...
There is a reason why news is also so negative and the product advertisements are a pleasant contrast...

So many other marketing things at play...
Social proof...
Commitment and consistency...
Finishing sets...
Authority...

I know these, I study these, I have used all of these, I teach these, I have courses I sell on these... I use them for good...

However, they are just as effective for evil too... It sucks for me seeing layers beneath... it’s predictable and irrational... actually a great book is called that... ‘predictably irrational’... Study marketing if possible even just to know when you are exposed to it... Part of me wants to put together a program just to teach these marketing psychology principles for everyday people, not just business, so people can understand... maybe one day 🙂
